Simon Waugh presents cheque for £60,000 to Brain Tumour Charity

The Mayor of Elmbridge for 2022-23, Councillor Simon Waugh, was delighted to present a cheque for the fantastic sum of £60,000 to The Brain Tumour Charity/Emily Oliver Fighting Fund.  The Mayor of Elmbridge Trust Fund will also receive a donation. These are the charities he had chosen to support during his Mayoral term of office.

The funds were raised with various events including the Mayoress’s Ladies’  Luncheon, a Charity Ball and a Golf Day. The Mayor was able to thank everyone for the huge support he received at his Civic Reception in April and at the Annual Council Meeting in May.

The funds raised will enable The Brain Tumour Charity to increase their pioneering research work. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and young adults under 40 in the UK and, because of their location, they have a uniquely devastating impact on quality of life. That’s why The Brain Tumour Charity are unwavering in their efforts to double survival and halve the harm done by brain tumours and the funds were raised in memory of Emily Oliver who passed away at the age of 21.

In presenting the cheque to Emily’s parents, Tim and Debi Oliver, Cllr Simon Waugh said “I am delighted that I was able to raise such an amazing amount of money during my Mayoral year for this fantastic charity.  Research is vital to increase the survival rates and to highlight symptoms of brain tumours and these funds will be vital to progress that research.  I would like to thank everyone who has supported me – their generosity has been overwhelming.”

Debi Oliver, an Ambassador for the Emily Oliver Fighting Fund, commented “On behalf of all those who have been affected by a brain tumour, and their family and friends, I really would like to thank the Mayor and Mayoress for their hard work in raising such an incredible amount of money for the charity, as well as raising huge awareness of the work that is ongoing. Our sincere gratitude to everybody who helped and supported the Mayor.”
